Across Uganda's West Nile region, many women continue to face barriers that limit their ability to achieve economic independence, access psychosocial support, and participate in community leadership. Poverty, gender-based violence, displacement, and limited financial opportunities often leave women struggling to provide for their families and realize their full potential.
The Women Rise Initiative was established to change this reality. Implemented by Peace for Women–West Nile (PfW-WN), the Women Rise Initiative is a holistic empowerment programme that equips women with the knowledge, confidence, resources, and support systems they need to rebuild their lives and become leaders of positive change.
The programme aligns with the organization's mission of empowering women, girls, and youth through psychosocial support, economic empowerment, leadership development, and community engagement.
Women Rise Initiative recognizes that true empowerment goes beyond income generation. Sustainable change happens when women are supported emotionally, socially, economically, and as leaders within their communities. The programme therefore focuses on four interconnected pillars:
Many women in West Nile—particularly those from refugee and host communities—have experienced trauma, violence, displacement, and social exclusion. Through psychosocial support, the initiative creates safe and supportive spaces where women can heal, regain confidence, and rebuild their lives. The programme promotes mental well-being, peer support, resilience, and referrals to appropriate services, enabling participants to move forward with renewed hope and dignity.
Economic independence is one of the strongest pathways to women's empowerment. Through entrepreneurship training, participants acquire practical business skills that help them identify opportunities, start small enterprises, and grow sustainable livelihoods.Women receive guidance in business planning, enterprise management, marketing, and innovation, helping them transform ideas into profitable ventures that improve household incomes and strengthen community resilience.
Access to financial services remains a major challenge for many women. The Women Rise Initiative promotes financial inclusion by strengthening savings cultures, improving financial literacy, and supporting participation in Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs).
These community-based savings groups enable women to save regularly, access affordable loans, invest in businesses, respond to emergencies, and build long-term financial security. This approach complements Peace for Women–West Nile's broader economic empowerment strategy, which emphasizes financial literacy, entrepreneurship, business management, and market linkages.
Empowered women become influential voices within their families, communities, and institutions. The initiative nurtures women leaders through mentorship, confidence building, civic engagement, and leadership training.Participants are encouraged to actively engage in community decision-making, advocate for their rights, and inspire other women and girls to pursue leadership opportunities
The Women Rise Initiative does more than empower individual women—it strengthens families and entire communities. When women are equipped with skills, financial resources, and confidence, they invest in their children's education, improve household welfare, support local businesses, and contribute to peaceful and inclusive community development.By integrating psychosocial support with economic empowerment and leadership development, the programme creates sustainable pathways toward resilience and self-reliance.
Peace for Women–West Nile is a women-led, non-profit Community-Based Organization headquartered in Arua City. The organization works across West Nile to address gender inequality, gender-based violence, poverty, social injustice, and exclusion affecting women, girls, youth, refugees, and host communities. Its community-driven programmes integrate women's empowerment, peacebuilding, climate resilience, and sustainable livelihoods to create lasting impact.
As Peace for Women–West Nile continues expanding its programmes across the region, the Women Rise Initiative remains a cornerstone of its commitment to creating a future where every woman has the opportunity to heal, lead, earn, and thrive.By investing in women's potential today, the initiative is helping build stronger families, resilient communities, and a more equitable future for West Nile.
